Is it safe to have a hive in my backyard?

We work with a species of honeybee known for being extremely docile. Remember, bees die when they sting, so they generally only do so as a last resort when they feel threatened. We do everything we can to ensure a safe, fun experience during our visits — including reminding you and your guests to never swat at bees, keep a safe distance, and avoid using machinery such as lawnmowers too close to the hive.

How much space do I need to host a hive?

Not much at all! Ideally, a backyard hive should have at least 5 feet of space in front of its entrance — think of this as a “runway” where bees can fly in and out without obstructions. The back of the hive should have about 3 to 5 feet of space for the beekeeper to work comfortably.

Should I check with my HOA first?

Yes — while the Oklahoma Apiary Act Title 2 Section 3-125 says that a local government or municipality cannot restrict the establishment or maintenance of a honeybee hive, it does not necessarily state that an HOA cannot. You should check with your HOA’s rules before purchasing a hive. If your HOA has questions about how our service works and the safety of hosting beehives in a neighborhood, we can help you point them in the right direction. Even if your HOA does not restrict the establishment of a hive, it is always good to talk to your neighbors if they are within a few feet of your backyard in order to maintain a good relationship with them.

I have children and/or pets, is it safe?

Yes! As long as good beekeeping practices are followed, it is perfectly safe to host a hive with children and pets. Hive placement is an important factor — we won’t put it directly next to a dog kennel or children’s play structures. During installation, we’ll show everyone how to move safely around bees. Generally, bees only sting in self-defense, so bee kind and you’ll be just fine.

Can I watch when my hive is being worked on?

Absolutely! We want to share our passion for honeybees with others. During every visit, we are there to care for the colony and educate anyone interested in the hive’s inner workings.

Question 6

How does honey harvest work?

Accepted Answer

On Premium management we handle honey harvest as part of the package. We also offer harvest assistance as an à la carte service: we help you pull and extract honey for you or with you. Bottling is not part of our honey harvesting at this time. But we are happy to help you source bottles and labels if you plan on selling your honey.

I already have hives. Can you still help?

Absolutely. If you feel in over your head, we offer hands-on coaching, single-visit inspections, pest and OAV treatment, and full-season management packages. We meet you where you are — whether you started last week or last decade.

How do OSU, COBA, and other local classes fit in?

Central Oklahoma has a strong beekeeping education community — OSU Extension, the Oklahoma Beekeepers Association, COBA, and Frontier Country Beekeepers. We encourage anyone interested to use those resources. If you cannot commit Saturdays to a class, or you want training tailored to your own hives on your schedule, that is where Oklahoma Hive Patrol comes in.

Can you beekeep at home?

Yes. Home beekeeping is common if you have enough space, follow local rules, and can keep up with seasonal hive care. If you want bees in the yard without owning the learning curve, that is exactly what our management packages are for.

What is the 3-3-3 rule for bees?

Accepted Answer

It usually means giving a new hive about 3 feet of space in front, 3 feet on the sides, and 3 feet of working room around it. That clearance keeps flight paths clear and gives you room to inspect without crowding the colony.

How hard is it to beekeep?

Accepted Answer

It is manageable for many beginners, but it does take regular attention, basic learning, and patience. Missed inspections and untreated mites are where most new keepers get into trouble. Coaching or full management can fill those gaps while you learn.

What naturally kills varroa mites?

Oxalic acid, thymol, and drone brood removal are common natural or low-tox approaches used against varroa mites. Treatment choice depends on season, colony strength, and how the bees are being managed — which is why mite monitoring is part of our packages.

What smell do bees absolutely hate?

Bees often dislike strong scents like smoke, peppermint, and some harsh fragrances. Smoke is used intentionally during inspections to calm the colony; everyday strong scents near the hive are usually best avoided.

Varroa mites are one of the biggest threats to managed honey bee colonies. Left untreated, mite loads can collapse a hive. Regular monitoring and timely treatment are a core part of keeping bees healthy in Oklahoma.

How long can a bee remember you?

Bees can learn and remember patterns, but they do not recognize people the way pets do. Calm, consistent handling matters more than whether the bees “know” you personally.

Is it true that what hurts the bee hurts the hive?

Yes. In beekeeping, stress, pests, and poor management can affect the whole colony. A queen issue, heavy mite load, or lack of food rarely stays an individual-bee problem for long.

How expensive is it to beekeep?

Strong perfumes, sweat, smoke, and alarm pheromones can make bees more defensive. If you are visiting a hive, skip cologne and move slowly — defensive bees are usually reacting to scent and disturbance, not personal dislike.

They prepare for colder weather, reduce activity, and shift focus toward survival and winter stores. Fall feeding, parasite treatment, and weight checks are how keepers help a colony make it through winter.

Will the government pay you to keep bees?

Sometimes there are grants or conservation programs, but there is usually no guaranteed payment just for keeping bees. Most backyard keepers do it for honey, pollination, and the experience — not a stipend.
